Curious Gallery Autumn 2014

LET US IMAGINE ALL BEINGS, THINGS AND PERSONS REVERTING TO NOTHINGNESS

This Autumn, Curious Projects invited Laura Porter to install a new version of one of her pieces – 'Let us imagine all beings, things and persons reverting to nothingness' – especially for the Project Space & Gallery.

Laura Porter’s work seeks to evoke a sense of social anxiety, questioning the notion of the ‘other’ in the simultaneous presence and absence of figurative forms.

Working with found materials that once had an intimate relationship with the body, the mundane is transformed into elements which take on an emotive meaning, as they undergo systematic treatments. Each item is uniformly coated in an unrelated substance, such as tar, bitumen or wax, and this formal manipulation aims to enhance its universal nature.
A subtle suggestion of the familiar is defamiliarised and rendered only partially reclaimable by the viewer.
